March

Graduate school is whopping my butt, I stay constantly busy with 5 classes, working, art club, and 15 hours of Practicum a week, & sign language class, but I do love it.  This week was the hardest academic week I have had so far.  We had a research paper due, 3 other papers, 64 statistics questions, a test, two quizzes, and 241 pages assigned to read this week.

Garden!

I am so excited to be at a placement for my practicum with a Supervisor that knows so much information and teaching me about planting and gardening!  We have a large space connected to our room and this week received a bulk supply of over 30 different plant seed packages.  We are going to work with the deaf children in the garden, planting, transplanting, and tending.  Next week I am getting my vegetable garden mapped out for my backyard and herbs and flowers for the front yard.  Alex and I can save even more money being vegetarians.

Monday's Newspaper

The headline of Nation reads Autism, closely spaced births linked: Study that the Second child may face higher risk.
“Close birth spacing may put a second-born child at higher risk for autism.” They did a study on half a million children in California that found, “Children born less than two years after siblings were considerably more likely to have an autism diagnosis compared to those born after at least three years.”  Government data also found that, “when babies are less than two years apart their chances of autism was 11% in 1995 and then 18% in 2002. Pregnancy depletes a mother’s nutrients like folate, a B vitamin found in leafy green vegetables, citrus fruit and dried beans,” the lack of folate is harmful to the child and the mother.
Study was funded by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and National Institutes of Health

DSM 5

They are finally getting ready to print the new DSM 5 within the next year or so.  It will be a pain to relearn and implement changes around America but it will distribute diagnosis a lot more effectively and be better for the younger generation of people to have equal opportunities.  I just spent the past few hours reading the revisions and found some interesting diagnosis they are completely adding to our psychiatric field of medicine...
Such As:

Late Language Emergence
Voice Disorder
Hoarding Disorder
Skin Picking Disorder
Olfactory Reference Syndrome
Removing the term Dementia and adding Major Neurocognitive Disorder
